Announcement: Talking 'The Wolf Man' w/ "How I Met Your Monster" Podcast!

My predilection for the classic Universal monster movies has never been a secret, so if I ever have a chance to talk about some of the horror genre’s most iconic figures, you’d best believe I’m going to take it.
Late last month, “How I Met Your Monster” podcast co-host Zach Wincik invited me to join him and co-hosts Danny Salemme and Casey Brewer on their show to discuss the 1941 classic The Wolf Man with them. Having been online friends with the crew for about a year now, the thought of recording with them in general was already enough to have me say yes, but the fact that we’d be covering a Universal monster was just too good to pass up, on top of the fact that this would be the first time the show discussed a classic Universal horror film.
As part of the podcast’s “Dog Days of Summer” triple feature, the initial two episodes saw the trio cover the werewolf masterpieces Silver Bullet (1985) and An American Werewolf in London (1981), with our episode on The Wolf Man being the concluding chapter of the trilogy. Their show has a few different segments, including giving some context about the production of the film (history, narrative choices, etc.), going over each moment the main monster/antagonist is shown on screen, talking about the “real monster” of the film (outdated social practices, fashion choices, etc.), and discussing whether or not we’d survive if we came across said character. While they provide a critical look at the films they discuss, it’s presented in a very casual, relaxed, and fun way.

Given the fact that two of the three co-hosts have never seen The Wolf Man until preparing for this episode, it was really fun to talk about the film with people who have just experienced watching it for the first time. Having grown up with this movie, there’s obviously a decent amount of knowledge that I’m able to contribute, but there’s still moments where I learn new things about the production or new ways to interpret certain aspects to the film, and it was fun to hear fresh perspectives from people that had just recently seen it.
Talking with Zach, Danny, and Casey for this episode felt just like how my college roommates and I would talk about these movies, and I had a great time talking with all three of them. With us being familiar with each other’s work for a while, it was nice to actually get to meet them and to have a great conversation with all of them at once. As always, I hope whoever takes the time to listen to the episode has as much fun listening to it as we had while recording it!
